Meeting Minutes

November 11, 2006 - August 10, 2010

Appalachian Pastel Society
Meeting Minutes
November 11, 2006

Karen Chambers called the meeting to order at 10:15 am.

The meeting was started with general in-house information.

It was brought up that Toni Tart and Merritt Roach need paper copies of any announcements or newsletters since they don’t use a computer.

There was a discussion of the times the Hendersonville Art League meets.

The night group meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month and the morning group meets the 4th Wednesday. The luncheon in December will be on the 3rd Tuesday.

Karen told us that Cheap Joe’s has a website connection, fineartstittle.com that provides free registration for artwork to prevent copyright infringement of your work. If ever you see an unauthorized copy of your work and present this to them, there is an automatic charge of $1,000 for the perpetrators.

She has also talked with Carolina Arts and Crafts on route 81, River Road behind Wendy’s in Biltmore in Asheville, about a discount on supplies. They are offering us a 20% discount. They are also interested in expanding their supplies to meet our needs. We will need to buy supplies from them. Karen has already talked to them about carrying Art Spectrum Colorfix paper, more pastel colors and supplies. Let her know what else and she will pass it on. But, we do need to support their confidence in our willingness to purchase professional supplies from them.

Susan Armitage has talked with people at the Arboretum. We need to submit slides for approval to have a show there.

Karen has volunteered to give a program on how to make our own slides. If you are interested, please contact Denise Geiger at geigerjd@charter.net or call 828-669-5947.

In the Hendersonville Art League show, Beverly Keyes won first place in the animal division, Kay Gordon won first place in landscapes, Merritt won 3rd place and Fran Greenberg won an honorable mention.

The PSNC is having a members show at Sertoma Park in Raleigh. Gina deGretchie, Karen Chambers and Nancy Clausen are participating.

Anyone who demos, teaches, or does a workshop should email Beverly Keyes at with what they would be able to teach, demonstrate, or bring her a paper telling her about themselves. Her e-mail address is beverlykies@bellsouth.net.

The minutes were read and approved. Mary so moved and Beverly seconded the motion.

Our treasurer was not able to be at the meeting, but it was noted that we now have 35 members. The exhibition committee noted that the Black Mountain Center for the  Arts would like us back next year. They had a fantastic response to our show.

We then discussed the upcoming programs. We were to have a program on framing in January, but the framer cannot make our meeting, but will be able to come in May. Beverly mentioned that there was a need to learn more about how to frame and matt our paintings.

Mary suggested that we have a Bob Rohm video. He has several out on water and a landscape video. She and Nancy attended his workshop in October and felt he was a good instructor. This would be a good program for January due to the possibility of bad weather.

We then discussed our March meeting. Luana Laconi Winner is going to give us a demonstration on painting the illusion of metal without using a metallic pastel. We would then adjourn for a bag lunch during which we work/talk and then have a workshop with her the rest of the afternoon. The cost and number of students allowed will be in the next newsletter. Mary moved we do this and Nancy seconded it.

It was also mentioned that the PSNC had a program that was put on by the Tru Vu glass people. It was decided that it would be better to do something like that at a later date. We discussed possible other programs. Beverly might be able to do a demo. Kay and Mary might demo the use of gold under pastel. Susan Karnatze may also do a demo.

We then went on to discuss the newsletter. The date for the newsletter coming out will be 2 weeks from our meeting. We should send a note or email Ed with any news we have for our newsletter at ehunting@gmail.com with “APS Article Submission” as the subject..

1. Tips on using pastels could be added.

2. Members could tell what they have been doing.

3. We could also include what exhibits are coming up within 3-4 hours driving range.

Before we broke into committees two new members were introduced, Colleen Hester from the Lake Lure Art League and Jan Onan.

Added news: Beverly Kies is having her own show at the Wickwire Gallery in Hendersonville at the end of November and the Lake Lure Art League is having a show and art sale. Karen is showing her work at the Green Life Grocery.

The committees formed into their group to work out plans for the year. Karen had provided folders for each one. Denise Geiger is helping with the program committee.

Appalachian Pastel Society
Meeting Minutes
January 13, 2007

Karen Chambers called the meeting to order.

Karen made the announcement that the program committee needed more help. There are just two of us and Nancy Clausen lives in Raleigh at least half of the time.

It was noted that for now the library in Black Mountain will be the best place for us to hold our bimonthly meetings.

People need to get information for the newsletter to Ed Hunting by the middle of the month, the 15th, to be published for the next newsletter. We need to tell of any news either about ourselves or news of exhibitions or shows.

We talked about our upcoming demonstration by Luana Laconi Winner. She will be here for our March meeting. After our bag lunch (bring your own), we will have an afternoon workshop with her from 1:00 to 5:00. The cost will be $85.00. The meeting is in Black Mountain at the Fine Arts Center and the workshop will be held at the Swannanoa Fine Art League building. (This was edited so as not to confuse).

Mary Robinson mentioned use of Vellum paper for for pastel painting. (After a search on the internet after the meeting, however, she found that the vellum paper is no longer available. People are, however, using mylar for pastel painting. To see more about this, go to http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=389050 and read about it’s use and see results. It’s a lovely look, and we are sure some of you may want to give it a try.)

Robbins Richardson gave the Treasurer’s report. We have $1,335. in our account.

Karen Chambers announced we are now a non profit organization.

Robbins Richardson is looking into our joining IAPS which states that we need to be an organization using soft pastels. The IAPS convention is in May of this year in Albequrque, N.M. For more information , anyone can go online. Beverly Kies is interested in going. Different ideas were discussed on the matter.

MaryRobinson mentioned that wetcanvas.com was a good source of information for the pastelist.

Kate Thayer said that she had talked talked with Terry Ludwig about sending a set of pastels to our show. Beverly Kies stated that she had been to his place where he makes them.

The idea was brought up that we need to start up a network for us to go in together on ordering large quanities of supplies.

Fran Greenberg will be listing everyone’s DVD’s for us to borrow.

Carolina Art Supply is giving us a discount on our pastel supplies.  They are trying to order the paper we use and other items through their supplier.

The meeting was adjourned for the Bob Rohm video on the Art of Water, Rippled Water.

There are the things I remember about the video in case no one else has done this:

Believability is his most important objective in a painting.
Make sure horizon is straight across with water.
Underpainting should be fairly bright.
Water repeats itself.
Keep simple tonality
Recommended studying Monet’s use of color in water.

Beverly Kies called the meeting to order and asked the visitors to introduce themselves. We had visitors from Mars Hill, Arden, Brevard, Marion and Swannanoa. Beverly announced that anyone interested in becoming a member could pick up an application form after the meeting or contact her later.

Susie Karnatz announced that she has 2 paintings in the‘Coming of Age’ show at the Transylvania Art Center in Brevard, N.C. It is an exhibition of work from members 60 years and older in the Transylvania County Arts Council.

Mary Robinson moved that we dispense with the minutes as they were in the newsletter and our time was limited. Robbins Richardson seconded the motion. We also dispensed with the treasurer’s report. We do have 36 paid members.

Gail Jackson, director of Black Mountain Art Center, said how happy she was we were there. There was also a youth exhibit upstairs that was very good. She also announced that the Center was having an auction and concert to raise money. The tickets were $12.00.

A report from the exhibition committee was given by Kay Gordon. Our show in November will be at the Grace Community Center near the Asheville airport. Luana Winner will be the juror. We will bring our paintings to the center the first Saturday in November. The show will be juried and hung that day. The reception will be that evening. Original work only will be taken. More details will follow in the newsletter.

We will need people to run the show and people for press releases and to write prospectus. Kay also announced that the exhibition committee will need a chair person for next year. She is retiring to work on her own work. Nancy introduced Luana Winner who was doing the demonstration for our program.

The meeting was adjourned for the program.

Meeting Minutes
May 12, 2007

APS President, Karen Chambers, called the meeting to order. It was reported that four of our members had paintings juried into the Southeastern Pastel Society Show. Kay Gordon and Kate Thayer each had two paintings juried in. Karen Chambers and Suzi Karnatz each had one.

Ruth Crowe from Eastern Tennessee attended our meeting. She believes that there are seven or eight others interested in our pastel society.

The access to our newsletter is aps.webtoady.com Anyone can send in work for the newsletter. A minor editor is needed to help Ed with editing when his assistant is not available. He/she will send the work on to Ed for the paper after corrections have been made.

Karen suggested that a computer-learning program be held at AB Tech in the computer lab for APS members to learn how to manipulate paintings on the computer. She also suggested that if we cannot find a place at AB Tech, we may be able to use the OP House.

It was suggested the Connie Vlahoulis send out meeting reminders about 10 days in advance.

Our November show is being held at the Grace Center, November 3, 2007. It is being hosted by the church. We have one-day delivery, judging and hanging. Luana Winner will be the judge. We have begun to take in prizes. So far, we have a gift certificate for a 78-piece set from Great American Art Works and a set from Terry Ludwig. Karen was asked to contact Carolina Arts and Crafts for a prize and Kay Gordon will ask suppliers for prizes at the IAPS.

The criteria for the Nov. show is, paintings should be less the 40" wide, wired for hanging, no saw tooth hangers, and all should be behind glass or Plexiglas. We are checking to see if there are guidelines for suitability.

The exhibition committee for the Black Mountain Art Center has not yet met to discuss their show schedule for the year 2008.

It was reported that our workshop ran in the red. SVAL charged us 10% to use their facility. Frances Greenberg, Al Junek, Denise Geiger, Connie Vlahoulis and Nancy Clausen worked together to help make it a success.

Karen announced that there would be a joint yard sale with SVAL on June 9 for used art supplies. Some of the proceeds would go to the appropriate organization. It starts at 9 a.m. Any supplies will be taken in on the Friday before. Kay Gordon and Mary Robinson will be stepping down from the jobs as chairperson of the Exhibition Committee. Someone needs to step up and get started for next year.

Mary reported that the Fairfield resort restaurant, ‘Azaleas’, at Lake Lure is looking for artists to exhibit their work with them. They will send someone to your studio or home to photograph your work to show the jurors.

We are asking members to participate in a Logo contest for our society.

Please bring your ideas to the November show. This will go on letterhead, Membership cards and correspondence. We would also like some additional artwork (painting images) for the newsletter. More will follow on this.

The meeting was adjourned for our program by Dave Whitaker on how to frame paintings.

Appalachian Pastel Society
Meeting Minutes
July 14, 2007

Our president Karen Chambers called our meeting to order at 10:00 at the Black Mountain Library.

It was announced that the Swannanoa Valley Fine Art League is sponsoring a workshop with Deborah Squires. The dates are August 7 and 8, from 10:00 to 4:30. The cost is $200.00. You can pre register by sending Denise Geiger $25.00. Deborah will take students to a site in the morning to sketch and then in the afternoon will go back to the studio to paint. She will give a workbook at the end of the workshop.

We welcomed Colleen Hester back.

A sign in sheet has been placed in the back of the room for members to sign in.

Our dues are due in September. They are $25.00.

Mary Robinson moved to approve the minutes. Pam Potter seconded them.

Beverly Keyes has asked that we consider moving the meetings from Saturday to a weekday. We also had discussion that perhaps we should have monthly meetings instead of bimonthly ones. Perhaps some of the meetings could be plein air painting get together.

We’ve had a change of venue for the September meeting. Since our speaker could not make the meeting, Mary suggested that we meet at the SVFAL building and bring in different types of papers to try out. We should also bring money to defer the cost.

Nancy may not be able to be at the September meeting. Pam Potter said she would take the notes for her.

Karen then brought the subject of new officers and program chairs for next year. Connie V. volunteered to do PR again and will be our Vice President. We need at this time Treasurer, Meeting Coordinator, and Program Chairs.

We then had a report from our Exhibition Committee, Kay Gordon and Mary Robinson.

Our show at the Grace Centre is the first Saturday in November (This has now been changed, see article on page two). The delivery of paintings, jurying and hanging the show will all be done in one day as there is a shortage of storage space. Our reception will coordinate with the program of the church that night.

The show is an open show whereby it will be open to nonmembers as well as members The non members will have to pay a higher fee. One painting per person and anyone bringing a painting will also bring something for the reception. Grace will accommodate us in regard to sales. Denise will be doing the PR. The prospectus will be on our website as well as in the SVFAL letter. I made a suggestion to put our information on the wire instead of taping it to the back of the painting.

We will need a table to display a bio. Perhaps could do a book mark or some type of business card. We could use Kay’s painting which appears on our newsletter. We have 3 sets of pastels, a certificate for another and more prizes coming in.

Kay said that even though she was stepping down as Exhibition Chair, she has already started to plan for next year, as every exhibition committee needs to do. We are up for discussion again at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. Also the Hendersonville Gallery may let us exhibit there and that should be free space. Connie’s studio may be interested in having a non juried show in the spring. She takes 20% commission. That would possibly be in April with a demonstration included. Karen mentioned that she had brought some samples of pigments back from France. They would be at the back of the room if we would like to see them.

Many thanks to Connie for her work in welcoming our new members with letters to them and in being so active in the membership.

According to Mary there is a new gallery at the Arboretum. They might be interested in us showing our work there. If Hendersonville comes through for our Fall show we voted to commit. This is for the year 2008.

After a short discussion of exhibition sales, gallery studios etc., we adjourned for the presentation by Kay and Denise on their experiences at the IAPS convention and afterwards.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Clausen - APS Secretary

Appalachian Pastel Society
Meeting Minutes
September 8, 2007

The meeting was called to order by Karen Chambers at 10:00 a.m. at the Swannanoa Art League Center.

Karen asked for all the members to introduce themselves and state their jobs. She then mentioned that we needed a membership chairman for next year and an exhibition chairman.

Our Webmaster, Ed Hunting would like us to send a slide and a short bio for our newsletter starting in perhaps January. We think we can feature more than one artist a month.

It was brought up that we can send things from our society to the International Pastel Society at www.pstelinternational.com. We can also send videos of our group. After some discussion, Gwen moved that we do this and Fran seconded it.

Karen mentioned that it has been exactly one year since we started pastel society. We started with 13 members and now have 39. All in one year.

Fran Greenberg reported on classes at the Swannanoa Valley Art League: An open portrait group meets on Mondays. Pat Michaels has a drawing and oil class on Tuesdays. Karen Chambers has a pastel class on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 3:30, On Thursdays Cheryl Keever has a plein aire oil class.

On Fridays there is open studio with figure drawing from 10 to 1:00. The cost for the Monday and Friday open studio/portrait/figure is to share the cost of the model. Anyone who is interested may contact Fran Greenberg at 828-225-9524.

Kay then reported on the November exhibition. Everyone who enters a painting needs to bring a refreshment. There was a list passed around for that. And another list was passed around for those who wanted to help with the take in/set-up/hanging, etc.

We can go to our website for the prospectus for the show. Kay passed out flyers for our show. We are also looking for another place to have a show next year. The Hendersonville Arts Council is a possibility. Nancy said that she could check with Kevin Beck about being a possible juror and having a workshop for us at some time in 2008.

Susie Karnatz brought up the idea of having a notebook with our bios in it for the show. She will work on this. We need to send her the information by regular mail. She lives in Brevard, N.C. Her address is 5039 Connestee Trail, Brevard, N.C. 28712.

Connie would like to do book marks for our show. Pam suggested we do bios for entrants. Mary Robinson said she would like a jpeg sent of your work that gets in the show. She will put together a profile to take to the arboretum. She also spoke about new pan pastels. We can get more information on on wetcanvas.com. Fran suggested that if we needed supplies,we could do a mass shipment and all chip in. That way we would not have to pay for shipping costs. Art Supply Warehouse at aswexpress.com has Art Spectrum and Unisom pastels on sale.

We had three visiters who are now new members Faith Johnson from Wyoming who is moving here, and Lorraine King and Leigh Condie from Asheville. All joined as a result of having attended our Paint-A-Round. Renewals were due in September. Our dues go from September to September of the following year.

The meeting was adjourned for our program. We were to try out different papers than we usually use. Some were made, some were new to us i.e. Uart or paper handmade by Paul deMarrais.

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board Meeting Minutes
September 8, 2007

The APS board meeting was brought to order by the president Karen Chambers.

Those attending the meeting were: Robbins Richardson, Denise Geiger, Karen Chambers. Nancy Clausen, Beverly Kies, and Kay Gordon.

Karen has asked that we have a board meeting before every bi-monthly meeting. We were all in agreement.

Robbins said we had $1,349.36 in our account as of last Tuesday. Robbins will send in her reports to Karen. She would like to try to stay on as Treasurer for one more year.

Beverly Kies has agreed to be our program chair for next year. We will need to replace her as Vice President. We will need an Exhibition Chairperson as well as a Membership Chair for next year.

Kay wondered if we needed a budget for our show in November.

The APS web site was discussed. Ed would like to showcase each of the members next year. We could post a bio and a painting. More on this later.

We would like to have another workshop with a demonstration. Kevin Beck was mentioned. I may be able to talk with someone when I take some paintings up for a show in November with the N.C. Pastel Society.

The need for a more permanent meeting place was discussed. We have decided to keep the meeting place at the Swannanoa Valley Art League Center.

There were two reasons for this. One we could stay later than 12:00 if necessary, and we can have demonstrations there, which we cannot currently do at the library.

We adjourned for our meeting and program.

Nancy Clausen - APS Secretary

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board Meeting Minutes
November 10, 2007

Karen called the Board meeting to order at 9:15 on Saturday November 10, 2007.

We were told that for next year we were in need of a Vice President, Exhibition Chair and a Workshop chair. Both the later should work together to perhaps coordinate the juror of the show with a workshop by him/her.

Next year our show will be at the Art Council building in Henderson. We are thinking of having people submit slides or CDs. This would make it easier on the juror as well as those entering our show, especially those entering from out of state. The board was in agreement of doing this. We will need a person to review the slides to make sure they are correctly done. That person will need an assistant as the slides will need to be put on a carasol as the juror wishes it.

Mary Robinson has taken photos of our show to submit to the arboretum.

We have added 8 new members.

Suzie Karnatz wrote up notes on how to improve our painting techniques for future shows. If anyone is interested in a copy please contact her.

Karen thanked everyone who gave of their time to help with our show.

Nancy will need to write thank you notes to Pete Gordon for all of the computer work before the show opening and the Harpist.

We discussed cut off dates for our dues as in how late in the APS year a new person can join and have it count toward the following year. We decided July and August. Our year starts in Sept.

Karen and Robbins will be meeting to discuss the membership and work out any bugs.

Robbins has asked that all mail be sent to her address as it would be easier for her to get it. This would do away with the P.O. Box and that expense. Nancy so moved and Beverly seconded the motion.

There was some discrepancy about cash taken in at the time of the show, but we were able to find where it went. Robbins recommended the next year she collect all monies for show and membership. We took in $825 in membership dues. The monies taken in for the show were $615. our expenses were $593. We made $22.00 profit.

New business: Nancy brought up the need to find someone to to download and send our newsletter to non computer people.

We discussed possible jurors for our next show. Kevin Beck is one to be considered. Suzie said she had some names. Mary volunteered to find a juror for the show. She also said she would find out the cost up front.

Beverly Keyes reported on her programs for the first three meetings of the year. In January we are having Paul de Marrais. He makes his own pastels and papers. He is giving a demonstration. In March Kelly Welsh is going to demonstrate her winning technique. In May Denise has recommended Wendy Outland. Wendy does charge  a $100.00 Fee.

The board meeting adjourned for the regular meeting.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Clausen - APS Secretary

Appalachian Pastel Society
General Meeting Minutes
November 10, 2007

Our meeting began at 10:00 with Beverly Keyes giving a report on our programs.

We have programs through March. And since everyone was interested in having Wendy Outland, we hope to have her come and speak to us in May. If anyone has any suggestions please either email Karen or Beverly or call them.

Karen gave the treasurer’s report as having $1349 last month. It was reported that we need someone to step forward for the job of Vice President. Their primary job would be to take care of membership which is a fairly easy job.

The board has voted to have the P.O. Box dissolved. All mail will be sent to Robbin’s home.

For the upcoming show in 2008, we have needs. We need an exhibition chair. We need someone to do the publicity and coordinate the slides coming in for the show. We also need a workshop chairman. All these jobs take more than one person to make things run smoothly and not be a burden on any one person and are fun to do with a committee.

Mary has volunteered to find a juror for next year’s show. She will be happy to entertain any suggestions.

We are still going to showcase one or two artists who are members in our newsletter. Please send a short bio and photo of your work to Ed Hunting.

For anyone who would like a critique of our show, we have them available. Luana took a lot of time to tell us her impressions of our work.

Membership forms are available. Please also pick up a packet of invitations to send or give to other people. Until we need a larger space we will continue to meet at the Swannanoa Valley Art League building. We may need later to reconsider the Black Mountain Library. For anyone who may need to double check on the location please call Karen.

Karen read the statement from Kay Gordon no how the decision was made to jury our show. The bottom line is that we should be in competition with ourselves not with the other artists. We also hope that any judges in the future will give us a critique of our work.

Denise is taking care of all post publicity for our show.

Leigh and Mary took photos of the show for our website.

There is a call for artists for the show in Winston Salem. This is a national show.

We are in need of someone making sure that those who don’t have a computer get the newsletter. Marnie Mickell will send copies out to our non computer members.

Karen introduced our visiters Deborah Chase, Cheryl Keever and Steve.

Kathryn Wilson was introduced. She demonstrated how she uses oil pastels. She also uses soft pastels.

Several observations from the demo. Kathryn uses Mt. Vision watercolors as an underpainting. The shapers she used were passed around. She uses them to sometimes push the color around on her support. She thinks a set of Senneilier oil pastels cost $96.00.

Respectfully Submitted,
Nancy Clausen, Secretary

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board Meeting Minutes
January 12, 2008

Karen began the board meeting with the treasurer’s report from Robbins Richardson. We have a total of $2,296.64 in our checking account. This is after sending $100. to IAPS for our membership dues.

Karen asked if anyone needed the minutes read or if there were any changes. The minutes had been read by everyone beforehand. Beverly Kies name had been spelled wrong and has been corrected.

Mary Robinson moved to accept minutes and Denise Geiger seconded it.

Kay reported that she and Kate Thayer had met and were proceeding ahead with our show for this year. We have signed a contract with the Hendersonville Fine Arts League for our show. It is to be held starting October and going through November. We will need to have pictures from the last show sent to them ASAP for the brochure they are printing. Mary will send a CD to them.

We will also have insurance during the time our show is there. We will be responsible for paintings sent in until they are unpacked. We will also be responsible for packing up after show. They will take a 30% commission on all sales. The cost of the reception will be spilt the art league and APS.

The show will be juried from CDs this time instead of actual paintings. The persons doing this will go through the CDs and assign everyone a number. Then they will send a larger CD to the juror.

Ed Hunting said he will put a tutorial on the website from the Southeastern Pastel Society which will explain how to do the CDs. Karen also suggested the Iris Photography would do it for us.

Karen asked if we might be interested in having a point system similar to SPS to raise our level of excellence. We decided to bring it before the members.

We had more discussion on the jurors for our show. A 5 day workshop or maybe a 3 day workshop could be included by the juror. We have talked with Leslie who charges $300. for a workshop, which would mean that we would need to charge $500 to cover airfare and accommodations. We are also thinking of Margaret Dyer. The workshop would be either portraits or landscape.

We need to start now to look for donations. We would like to see some monetary donations as well as the supplies. We are thinking of using Karen’s panels to provide extra space.

We are in need of a PR person. This is a big job and requires time. There are examples of what to write and where to send the info and when to send in available. We also need to get the information our to other pastel societies.

The next order of business was to discuss possibly providing a stipend for the people coming in to do our programs. Mary moved that for now we give them $50.00 to help defer expenses. Beverly Kies seconded it. We also voted to send Kathryn Wilson $50. for doing our program in November.

Pam Potter volunteered to take on the job of Membership Chair which is also the job of Vice President. We still need a publicity chair.

Mary Robinson volunteered to be our liason with IAPS. She will keep us updated on any events that appear on their website.

The question came up as to whether or not we needed to be put in the Asheville roster so people would be aware ofour existence. We voted to do this. Karen volunteered to take care of this. Susan Karnatz will also take care of getting the word out.

The board meeting was adjourned for our regular meeting.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Clausen - APS Secretary

Appalachian Pastel Society
General Meeting Minutes
January 12, 2008

Our president Karen Chambers brought the meeting to order. She introduced herself and the officers and the chair persons.

At this time we need to have a workshop chairperson and also need to find a place to have the workshops. Kay Gordon suggested Christ Church in Hendersonville. There would be a charge of $50.00

For our show in October we only want to have CD’s submitted. We will have a tutorial beforehand. Iris Photo graphics on Merriman Ave. will also do CD’s

Jan Onan is going to do the PR for our show with the help of Leigh Carter. It was mentioned that we also need someone to do PR for our meetings.

Karen brought up the business of having a membership hierarchy similar to that of the Southeastern Pastel Society. About half of the members voted yes. We decided we needed more information before we take a final vote.

We are still working on the juror for our show with a workshop connected with it.

We now have 50 members.

Mary Robinson wanted to know if anyone had photos of our paint around. She wanted to send them to IAPS.

Denise Geiger reported on workshops given by the Swannanoa Valley Fine Art League. On May 15 and 16 Deborah Squires will be doing a pastel workshop. Tom Lynch will be doing a water color workshop on in June for 3 days. In October Roger Dale Brown will be giving one on oils. If anyone is interested please call Mary McMurray for more information.

Gina Gomez DeGrechie is holding a series of plein air workshops. They will be on the different seasons. She is teaching the workshop to coincide with the seasons of the year. It will be held at the Cottages at Spring Hope Farm. She is sending the information to Ed and has flyers in the back of the room.

Karen is working on an information sheet to standardize the size of mats and frames. She also told us of two good books. One is Gallery Without Walls and the Art Spirit by Robert Henri.

We then introduced our visiters. Heather Friday has been painting in pastels since 1987.

Kay Rob has been painting for 15 years. Both are from Hickory. Karen Wiley from Spruce Pine has painted for about 1 year and Nancy Moore has been dabbling for years.

Karen then introduced Paul DeMarais who demonstrated his pastels and how he paints for our program. He showed us how he makes his surfaces and gave us hand outs about materials he uses and where to buy them. He’s been painting for over 30 years.

After the program we were allowed to buy the pastels he brought with him.

It was suggested that we have the telephone person, Joan Ingles, make calls to the people who have not renewed in order to see whether or not they forgot to sign up again. Pam and Robbins will be getting together to compare notes on the members and Pam hopes to put together a phone book for the members.

We then had Kay’s report on our upcoming show in October.

Margaret Dyer will be our juror. She will also give a three day workshop after the show. The workshop will cost $300.00 and will be on figure drawing.

The Prospectus will be published on our website soon. There will also be instructions has to how to take pictures with a digital camera and then proceed to make a CD. We will be accepting only CD’s of paintings for jurying of the show.

We can also get the software off the website. Kate Thayer went through the instructions and was able to do a CD. In addition to product awards we hope to also have cash awards. Beverly will be going door to door to ask the businesses in Hendersonville if they would like to buy an ad in the catalogue we will be producing for the show. We have not yet decided what to charge. We think it would be a nice idea if the contributing businesses would also put a coupon in with their ads which might draw people into their places of business.

Southeastern Pastel Society’s show is in Atlanta. Anyone interested in entering their international show, the date for entry is no later than April 1st.

Jan Onan and Leigh Condie have volunteered to do the publicity for our show in October.

Kate Thayer is making tentative arrangements for our 2009 show at the Aboretum. It would run for three months. Ed Hunting needs us to be more on time with our news articles. They need to be in to him no later than the 15th of April for the May newsletter.

Mary Robinson and Kay Gordon brought up the need for a business card for our members. It was discussed and then made into a motion. Kay made the motion that we allocate $50.00 toward this and a second was made by Pam. Other options were discussed for advertising. Susie is going to find out the cost and will do the design for a card to put out to advertise the APS. When the design is done she will then send it out to the board members for approval.

Corrections to the minutes:

Our show in October will be at the Art Council of Hendersonville County not the Art League. The insurance will be by the Art Council Gallery.

The church is charging $50.00 per day, not $50.00 for the whole workshop.

Nancy so moved and Beverly made the second to adjourn the board meeting.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Clausen - APS Secretary

Appalachian Pastel Society
General Meeting Minutes
March 8, 2008

Pam Patter called the meeting to order in place of Karen Chambers as Karen is away.

We have one new member, Kim Rowe who takes Karen’s classes. Also visiting with us was Sally Currin.

The minutes were approved from the newsletter.

Robbins gave the treasurer’s report. We have $ 2,296.64 in our account.

Kay Gordon gave a report on our upcoming show in October.

The juror will be Margaret Dyer. She is also giving a workshop on October 4th, 5th and 6th which is a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Only 18 will be in the workshop. If those interested sign up now, they can give a deposit of $100.00 with the remainder of $200.00 due before the workshop. The workshop will be in the Hendersonville area. Margaret teaches all over the country. Fran has taken from her and said she learned a lot.

The entries into the show will be CD only. We have instructions for the members to take the digital picture and go through to making the CD. Kate Thayer has gone through the process and has mastered it. The instruction came from Southeastern Pastel Society. CD’s can also be made from photo shops like Iris in town and can also be taken to CVS. Our dead line for the CD’s is August 1st. There is a possibility that 3 paintings may be submitted. Only 2 will be in the show. The actual judging will be done after the show is hung.

Kate Thayer is in charge of the shipped work. If shipping, piece needs to be properly crated. All costs need to be paid up front. UPS will take to Arts Council, Kate and committee will unpack and hang. After the show, they will repack and UPS will pick up.

Beverly reported on the catalogue. Businesses will be asked to advertise or to give donations. Beverly is looking into prices for ads. If the business donates a sum of money their names will be attached to that particular painting which won that sum of money.

We think if the ad features a coupon, it will draw people into that business. The ads need to be camera ready. The catalogue will be in black and white although Pam will ask someone she knows about the price of some color. We hope to have catalogues to put into the stores and also places where if people are in town for conventions, they will see a catalogue and come to see the show.

Beverly would like any suggestions for programs.

We still need someone to fill the position for general publicity. Jan and Leigh are doing the publicity for the show.

Ed Hunting needs articles for our newsletter by April 15th for our May newsletter.

Kate was given a box of Terri Ludwig pastels by Terri Ludwig to pass out to our members in as much as he was not contacted to give a prize for our last show. We needed a letter written to him to let him know that the pastels had been distributed.

The multi media board is late. The sheets are $9.00 each.

Kate Thayer is in the Carolina Gallery at Morgan Square in Spartenburg, S.C. The reception will be from 6:30 to 9:00 P.M. on the 13th.

Deborah Squire is giving a workshop May 15th and 16th with the SVFAL.

Leigh moved that we adjourn for our program and Fran made the second. In as much as Kelly was sick, Beverly Keis gave some time to tell how she went about creating her beautiful animal photos. She currently has work at the Stone Soup in Landrum.

The rest of the program time Susie Karnatz told us how she started a painting and progressed through the process. She currently has a show at the Opportunity House in Hendersonville. Her comments on her method of painting were very informative.

Board Meeting Minutes
May 10, 2008

After organizing our new meeting room, we began our board meeting.

The minutes from the last Board Meeting were approved.

Pam brought a brochure from The Hilton Head Art Show to see how they arranged their program in the brochure. It will help us in setting up ours.

Pam Potter than gave a membership report. She has been looking through all the records to see what interest’s people have expressed in the past or the jobs they have held. She will be checking with Robbins on any updates we may have. She would also like a list from Ed. Karen mentioned that we had 3 more members join at the last meeting.

We mentioned pro rating. In as much as the fee is so little we will not pro rate dues. However, if a new member wants to join say in July, he or she will not have to pay dues again to the following year. We will list the benefits to being a member on the website. We will be adding Karen’s phone number so that if there are questions, they can contact her.

A space for the check number will be added to the form as well as a list of committees/ interests that the new member may check.

Membership lists will be sent out and we will also have them at the meeting for those who do not have computers. Any that are left will be for members that aren’t at the meeting and will be mailed to them.

Kay Gordon gave the Exhibition Report.

The prospectus is now on the website. She did bring copies for those who do not have a computer. We will be having great awards for the show.

Last year we had a memorial award in memory of Ella Maguire given by Mary Robinson.

If anyone would like to help with this scholarship award please contact Mary Robinson.

Beverly Kies is in charge of raising money for our programs and awards. She has the forms ready for the businesses to fill out and send in for advertising in our brochure. These were passed out to the board members. We have also gotten a response from Uart to donate another award this year.

The workshop being given by Margaret Dyer is now filled.

We have a waiting list with people coming in from out of state. The waiting list will have up to ten people only.

We were given business cards for the Appalachian Pastel Society. They are really nice.

We will be using them when we go to call on businesses and also in talking to potential members. Mary Robinson is our contact person for IAPS. They are having a calendar competition.

They are looking for 18 paintings by September first. At our July meeting we will each bring a painting to be selected by the group to represent us in the competition.

Each of us will be given one vote. We hope to have a person who will explain to us what to look for in judging a painting at our meeting. A slide of that painting would then be sent to IAPS. If that painting is selected the person would receive a point toward receiving a medal from IAPS. A person needs a total of five points. IAPS also has their big show the following summer in conjunction with there convention. We should all send in a selection.

Our next meeting will be here at the Ag center. We plan on having our meetings here from now on. The meeting was adjourned at 10:00.

Nancy Clausen - APS Secretary

Appalachian Pastel Society
General Meeting Minutes
May 10, 2008

Our president Karen Chambers started the meeting at 10:00. She announced that there were newsletters and information about upcoming shows from other organizations in the back of the room. She also let us know that the paper had arrived for those who had been interested in it. Everyone should be aware that it will break if dropped. She then showed us the U-line catalogue. For those interested, they sell static free bags for displaying paintings in art bins.

Kay Gordon then gave us a report on the upcoming show and workshop.

The workshop with Margaret Dyer is now filled. There isnow a list for waiting room only. We will only allow ten on that list.

The prizes for the show are as follows: $1000. for Grand Prize, $500. for 2nd prize and 3rd prize is $400. Trade items will be given for the other prizes plus the Ella Maguire Memorial Award.

Right now we do not have the money for the awards, but we hope to have it through the ads that businesses will be purchasing or through donations.

At our next meeting members are asked to bring a painting. IAPS is having a calendar competition.

Members will have one vote to choose the painting which will represent us for the competition. We can only send a slide of one painting to represent APS. This will not only benefit the society, but the member whose painting is chosen. IAPS gives out points to its members when they are juried into one of their shows or in this case calendar competition. When the member receives five points they are then awarded a gold medal. The deadline for this is September 1st.

Mary pointed out that the size doesn’t matter. Also it need not be framed, but should be matted. Mary also suggested that we go to IAPS@pastel international.com for the information. Also check the information for the 12th exhibition web show.

We hope to have someone come who has juried shows in the past and give us some pointers in what to look for in judging the paintings.

Mary announced that Kay Gordon had been juried into the IAPS 11th Exhibition show in Youngstown Ohio. The show runs from June 8th to August 30th.

Congratulations to Kay and also to Merritt Roache and Susan Sinyai for being juried into the SPS 13thInternational Open Exhibit. The show is at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art in Atlanta, Ga. The show runs from June 12 to august 10.

We now have business cards available to our members. These can be used to give people who are interested in our organization. We can also use them as we talk to people about giving us an ad for our show brochure.

We still need people who would like to show case their work in our newsletter.

Mary asked if anyone would take on the responsibility of sending out short notices when necessary.

Karen then asked if there was anymore news.

The Art League of Henderson County needs some help.

The Grace Center where they meet for the evening meeting is asking them to pay $50. a month plus $100. for someone to open the building and close up after the meeting. They need a place to meet for this one month.

The Art Council is having their studio tour the October 11th and 12th. Merritt Roache has asked us to make the announcement. They will have a small show of just one piece by each participating artist. If you have any questions please call the art council at 828-693-8504. Constanza Knight will help you. For an application form you can go to www. acofnc.org.

Kate announced that she had an easel and umbrella for sale. They can be seen at the back of the room after the meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 10;45. Those who wanted were able to set up easels and work on a still life. They were critiqued afterwards.

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board Meeting Minutes
July 12, 2008

Karen opened the Board meeting at 9:00 at the Ag center.

Pam Potter gave her membership report. She now has the format set up to put in the members. We have 4 new members. Nikki Bonds and Tom Marshall are two of them.

The exhibition report was given by Kay Gordon. We have entries coming in for our show from out of state, but the members are slow getting theirs in as of this meeting. She felt that we needed to see if anyone is having trouble with doing CDs.

The workshop has filled up and people keep asking about it. We decided that it might be a good idea to ask if Margaret would be interested in doing a second workshop with the people on the waiting list.

Beverly Kies gave a report on the awards for the show and the ads. She said she is getting some really nice gifts from the venders. The venders have mentioned that they would like a list of members. We felt we should give them names only.

We need our members to have a more active part in soliciting businesses for ads for our brochure. Also if anyone has asked a company for an ad, they should go back and see if the business has forgotten. We need the ads in by the 15th of August for the printer.

I brought up having a show at Kevin Beck’s gallery in Blowing Rock. We would have to pay for the press and the postage for the invitations he will be sending out on our behalf. I will be pursuing this as a possible member’s show.

Karen said we need the phone committee to start calling the members for nominations for officers and committee chairs for the next year.

The next meeting will be September 13th. We will be having a paint around like last year. We would like to have everyone bring in refreshments.

The meeting was adjourned. The General meeting followed.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Clausen - APS Secretary

Appalachian Pastel Society
General Meeting Minutes
July 12, 2008

Karen brought the meeting to order at 10:00.

We had three visiters, Sylvia Williams, Pam who is from Waynesville and Meredith Adler from Marshall.

Our treasurer Robbins Richardson was out of town. We are fine in that area.

Kay Gordon gave her report on the exhibition and workshop. Entrees are arriving daily, mostly from non members. Prizes start at $1000.00 down to $100.00. We also have prizes from venders that are beautiful. Terry Ludwig sent pastels, Jack Richeson sent Unison pastels, etc. The deadline for our entrees is August 1st.

The workshop is filled with eight people on a waiting list. Kay will ask Margaret if she would be interested in doing a second workshop the following week. Jan Onan is doing a super job with advertising.

Ads are slow coming in. The money is to go toward prizes for our show. If everyone could get at least one ad, which is tax deductible, if would be very helpful. It is also necessary to go back and double check with the people that express interest in donating or giving an ad as sometimes they get forgetful. You need to give them a contact person and phone number if they have questions. The deadline is August 1st. If you run out of the applications please tell Kay and she will email you more.

Mary Robinson reported that the Pastel Journal has our show on their blog.

Beverly Kies, our program chairman reported that next month we will have our paint around like we did last year. We would like nine artists to start a painting on their own paper and then at intervals other people would get to try it out. The original painter would finish the painting at the end. We are asking everyone to bring some sort of refreshment, finger food or drinks. Karen is making sure we have the building on that month because the WNC fair is that weekend.

Nancy Clausen is looking into a show at the Kevin Beck studio in Blowing Rock. Kevin is a student of Albert Handel.

Next year is the IAPS convention. Karen suggested that a group of artists only get together and rent a van and drive down, possibly spending some time before or after the convention to paint some of the lovely scenery there. The convention is in late May.

Susie Karnatz has asked for some help with the brochure for our show.

Kate Thayer passed out screening for cleaning our pastel trays. She also brought a book to sell.

Mary would like to see a directory for our membership. We need it now.

We should try for a booklet like Swannanoa Art League has.

The Lake Lure Art League is having a show in Tyron. Some of our members are members there, one of which is Mary Robinson.

In April, Kingsport is having Bill Hosner for a workshop.

Kay Gordon won a 3rd place in the Artists Magazine competition, in the still life category. She also won a Bronze award in the IAPS competition. Sheryl Daniels had two paintings juried into the Alabama Pastel Show.

Our program began with Wendy Overland. She is the art consultant with Blue Spiral Gallery and she works with some of our members on marketing their work.

Some of the points she made are as follows.

A show should have a diversity of work and be of high quality. The judge needs to be totally impartial. We need to think about style, our style.

It’s important that we keep a record digitally of everything we paint so we can go back and compare what we are doing now with what we did before. Composition is very important.

Presentation of piece is important i.e. matting and framing. Innovation is a good thing providing it doesn’t look forced. She looks for the artist’s mastery in the medium and their technical ability.

After our program we voted on whose painting should represent our society in the calendar competition with IAPS. Kay Gordon’s painting won. Congratulations to Kay.

Mary made a motion that APS pay for the slides, if necessary, to be sent to IAPS. Bev made a second and everyone approved the motion.

A member contributed to the Ellen Macquire award.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:00.

Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Clausen - APS Secretary

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board Meeting Minutes
September 13, 2008

Karen Chambers called the APS Board Meeting to order at 9:30am at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. In attendance were Beverly Kies, Robbins Richardson, and Pam Potter, standing in for Nancy Clausen, as Secretary.

Karen confirmed the Margaret Dyer workshops are full. Beverly confirmed the Oct. 3rd show catalogue funds have all been received by sponsors with the exception of Mast General Store.

Robbins updated the treasurer’s report, and Pam Potter gave the membership report with 77 members. We have a number of new members joining with their Oct 3rd show entry.

Karen passed out a copy of the Committees for 9/2008-9/2009 and announced Beverly Kies has agreed to serve as President, Pam Potter will continue as VP and Membership chair, Susan Sinyai has agreed to serve as Treasurer, and the position of Secretary is still open. Nancy Clausen and Karen Chambers will share the chair for Exhibitions for a 2 year term due to the long-term planning required to get into the larger exhibition venues.

Karen Wylie will serve as Program and Workshop/Classes Chair since the requests may serve to fill either need, Marnie Mikell will serve as Publicity Chair, Gine DeGrechie will be the Finance Chair, and Pam Riley has agreed to chair the Telephone Committee. We will post the current Committee positions should anyone wish to volunteer to sit on their committees or just have contacts that may be useful.

Nancy Clausen is working with Kevin Beck for a ‘members only’ non-judged show in his Blowing Rock/Boone gallery. He needs $250 for postcards, and would require all art work be ‘for sale’ and his gallery would take 35% to cover their advertising expenses, etc. We would have to select one (1) image for the postcards by Dec.15th, and the show would be hung on April 14th, and taken down on May 7th. We could have a members ‘paint out’/ workshop weekend on either or both of these dates.

Karen suggested we set for a five (5) year business plan in order to formulate the goals of our organization, and keep us focused on what our members really want from our organization. We need to meet the goals set forth by our members.

This October was the first National show for our organization.

Karen suggested we have a national show every other year, e.g. 10/2008, 10/2010 and a member show the subsequent years, e.g. 4/2009, 4/2011, possibly at Black Mountain Center for the Arts.

Many of our members worked very hard to raise money for the national show awards, and were disappointed when they did not get accepted into the show. However, we need to strive to the quality of art work at the level of a national competition, and congratulate those members who were accepted into the show.

We must also provide members with a platform to seek feedback on their work, in order for them to continually improve and strive for their personal goals.

Beverly so moved and Karen made the second to adjourn the board meeting.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the Secretary, Nancy Clausen,

Appalachian Pastel Society
General Meeting Minutes
September 13, 2008

The APS General Meeting was called to order at 10:00am by Karen Chambers, who introduced Beverly Kies as our new President. Beverly reviewed the Board discussions with the members in attendance, and solicited anything for ‘the good of the order’ and/or any ‘new business’ from members, the following was raised:

• We should post a ‘paint out’ schedule of time and place for the year so members can meet informally for plein aire activities.

• More experienced members could offer classes once a year.

• A small works or miniature, 12"x12", unframed paintings, could be offered for less than $100 for a fund raiser and split 50/50 with the artist and APS.

• Kate Thayer noted a framer, Sean Robbins, near Biltmore Mall, “Frame-it-to-a-T” offers artist discounts of 10- 20%.

• Denise Geiger noted SVFAL will have a Christmas Gala on Dec.6, and Deborah Squire has donated one of her paintings for the raffle, and fund raiser. There will be a professional auctioneer for contributed art work, and music and dance. Tickets are $10 each which includes a raffle ticket and food/ drink. It will be held at the Chevron Showroom on Montreat Road.

• Oct. 11& 12 is the open studio tour in Hendersonville.

Our show will be up during the tour so we should get a lot of visibility at the Art Council.

The meeting was adjourned and our ‘paint around’ began with a number of easels being setup with rough sketches of photos for each member to work on, and rotate to the next easel. We hope to use the works in our fund raisers.

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board Meeting Minutes
November 8, 2008

Beverly Kies brought the meeting to order.

The first order of business was the membership list. It was noted that we needed to have a larger format. It was difficult to read it as it is now being done.

It was also noted that when we get any new members we need to make sure that they get on our email list in a timely manner. One new member was not aware of our activities because he wasn’t put on the list. We also felt that we should have welcoming form letters sent to the new members. After each meeting we need to see who comes back or follow up.

We need to follow up on who has not renewed their membership.

Ed needs to have updates of new members in a timely manner.

During the meeting Nancy will report on the non-juried Kevin Beck show in Blowing Rock. The show will run from April 14th until May 7th. They would like 40 paintings. We felt that we could meet on a particular day and consolidate painting deliveries so not everyone would have to go. The gallery charges 35% commission. We are going to ask members to who are participating to give $10.00 to help with the advertising fee.

We then did a recap of the recent show’s numbers. We still need to pay Mary for the ribbons. That will be $66.67, also Gwen needs to submit a receipt to be paid. There will be some expense for shipping paintings back to artists. So far it looks as if we have $2,410 in the bank. We will discus how much the exhibition/workshop made at the planning meeting on Tuesday. Fee to IAPS needs to be paid.

We need to send out hard copies of our news letter to people without e mails.

Karen and I will start looking for our 2010 national show. Karen will talk about our juried show in 2009 during the general meeting.

We felt we should call the person doing the program before our meetings to give them a gentle reminder.

Respectfully Submitted,
Nancy Clausen - APS Secretary

Margaret dyer juried in 56 paintings, of which 13 were from our members. Many names representing PSA were also in our show. We held two workshops in which 36 people attended. At this time it looks as if we made $4000 over and above our expenses.

Kay brought in the CDs we sent in for the show. Anyone who wants theirs please see Kay after the meeting.

We discussed the CD entry. It was felt that it was the easiest way to go. All groups are asking for CDs to be submitted. We have the directions on our website. It will take you through taking the picture to putting on the CD. We may have a demo and time set aside for members to try it at a meeting in the future.

Renewal membership fees are past due now. The membership goes from September to September.

Nancy Clausen reported on the Kevin Beck show. It will be a nonjuried show. The dates are from the 14th of April to May 7th. On the day to deliver the paintings we will meet and transport paintings for anyone not wanting to drive to Blowing Rock. There will be a $10.00 charge to defray the advertising expenses. The gallery charges a 35% commission.

Denise Geiger announced that the SVFAL is having an auction in December at the White Horse in Black Mountain. Anyone interested is asked to donate a painting for the auction. A painting by Deborah Squires is to be raffled off.

Fran asked if the donation had to be something we did. It does not.

Karen Wylie, our program chair, announced that at our January meeting Karen Margulis would be giving a demonstration on painting snow. After a short lunch break, we will meet back at the Ag center for a workshop. The fee is $45.00. If interested please send money to Karen Chambers and make all checks out to the APS. The workshop will hold 20 people.

We then had a report by Karen Chambers on our next members show. It will be at the Black Mountain Art Center. The show will run from Oct. 2nd until Oct. 31st or Nov. 14th.

The center is not sure as to the duration of the show. Kevin Beck will jury the show. We will be sending images to him before the show. He will be doing a workshop for us. It will cost about $350 for 3 days and $475 for a week. The workshop will be plein aire.

We then had a program by Fran’s husband Ken Hasson. He showed us how to make a filter system for our studios.

The program was followed by a critique. Marion Sink and Meredith Adler brought in paintings.

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board Meeting Minutes
January 10, 2009

Our president Beverly Kies called the board meeting to order.

Nancy Clausen was asked to take the minutes as Colleen Hester was not there.

Susan Sinyi gave the treasurer’s report. We have $5,074.50 in the bank.

There is an outstanding check for $90.00 and a $100.00 check to IAPS not recorded. We also have checks ready for deposit.

Beverly reported sending out Thank You notes to all those who contributed with an ad or donation to our October show.

Karen Chambers wondered if we needed note cards with our logo on them.

We do have a logo which Ed can send out for us to use.

Kay gave the membership report. Currently we have 52 members. There is a list on the back table of those who have not paid. Beverly feels we need to keep a record of everyone who has paid and let those members know if they have not paid.

Karen and Kay have been discussing the newsletter format. We need a good calendar so members will know what is happening in a timely manner. Someone needs to collect the information for the calendar and format it for Kay. Then we can send it to Ed for the newsletter. We will need to give the info to Kay immediately so she can assemble it.

We will send out post office mailings with envelopes and programs. Those of us with emails should check for any meetings or information.

The Kevin Beck show was discussed next. Karen reported that the show will run from March 2nd to March 22nd. Those who cannot take their paintings directly to the studio in Blowing Rock can bring them to the Ag center on February 28th between 10:00 and 2:00 for us to take them to Blowing Rock. Kevin’s gallery takes a 35% commission. We will ask if members if they would like a reception. It would be on Sunday March 8th from 2:00 to 4:00. We would supply the refreshments.

There is no painting size limitation and can be any subject. However, if the painting is priced inappropriately they will not hang it. It is a non juried show. We will need a short bio from each artist and why they painted it. We then discussed the member’s show in October. It will be held at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. The show begins on October 1st. As yet we don’t know if the show will run for a month or six weeks. We need a CD of 2 paintings/artist by august 14th. Kevin Beck will then jury the show in the following two weeks.

His workshop that weekend will be plein aire. His minimum is 8 to 10 with a maximum or 18. We have not settled on a firm price as yet.

Everett Schmidt, workshop coordinator, gave a report on the Jack Pardue workshop. The workshop will be in Brevard from June 1st to the 5th. He will do a daily critique at the end of the day. The workshop will cost $400/ person. He is paying us $800. for our sponsorship.

As for the workshop today, 10 people have paid, another 10 are bringing checks. Since Saturday, when a notice went out, 75% of the people decided to take the work shop being held this afternoon. We had a sign up for people who wished to have their lunch brought in from Ruby Tuesday.

Respectfully Submitted,
Nancy Clausen

Appalachian Pastel Society
General Meeting Minutes
January 10, 2009

Our President, Beverly Kies, opened the meeting and welcomed the 32 members in attendance. Short discussions continued on the following subjects:

-The previous show at the Hendersonville Arts Council Gallery was a success, with good quality art work shown and many sales by the artist in the show.

-Kay Gordon is now sending out emails to notify members of coming events.

-We may restructure the newsletter to include a calendar of events on the front page.

-Everyone needs to pay their yearly membership dues of $25. We have 55 members who have paid and 33 who have yet to pay. We welcomed 3 new members today.

-Karen Chambers reported on the show in Blowing Rock for members only. This show will be limited to two pieces for each member that must be for sale. The size must be no larger than 38" wide and framed or matted nicely in white or cream mats. There is a $10 entry fee to cover the cost of fliers and mailings. Pick up for pieces will be on Saturday Feb 28 from 10-12noon at the Ag center for a Monday March 2 delivery and hanging. The opening will be Sunday March 8th from 2-4pm. The gallery will get 35% commission so consider this when pricing your piece but be reasonable in your pricing. The owner Kevin Beck retains the right to refuse any piece that is not reasonably priced to sell. Please include a short typed bio that can be placed in a book at the gallery and include a separate short description about your pieces you are entering such as title medium and comments you would like to include. Please let Karen know if you plan on entering art work in this show and if you are willing to come to the reception and bring an item for refreshments. You can email Karen at karenpaints@hotmail.com.

-Karen Wiley is our program planner this year and has planned “paint in’s” on the months we do not have meetings. The “paint in’s” are an informal get together where members can come set up their easels and paint together and share ideas and tips about pastels. The first one will be held Saturday Feb 14th at the Agriculture Center from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. She will also bring someone who is going to share tips about photographing your work. If you want to bring your camera and laptop they will help show you how to document your work.

-At the next regular meeting on March14th at 10:00 am Jack Pardue will be present to demonstrate and talk to the members. He will be conducting a workshop June 1-5th here in Brevard area. The cost for the 5 day workshop will be $400 and it is limited to 10-16 people. One of our members Everette Schmidt is planning this event. For more info or to register, go directly to the artist’s website. www.parduestudio.com

-Karen Wiley introduced our speaker for the day, Karen Margulis from Marietta, Georgia.

Karen Margulis has a Masters in Art Education and was a photographer until she discovered pastels several years ago. Some of her teachers in pastel include Albert Handel, and Stan Sperlak. Karen has learned most from painting every day and the tool she has used to keep herself motivated is to use the internet as a dairy. She does this by posting a photograph of her daily paintings on a blog. This has given her insight by studying her progress on the blog and also by receiving input from other artists.

Karen has learned much from painting winter landscapes because during the winter you can see the simple structure of the landscapes and the subtle colors of nature. She uses mostly her own photos as inspiration for her landscapes and has studied many books about how to paint the winter landscape including the book “Light and Color with Pastel.” She also has learned from Debra Secor, who has an on line course about painting snow scenes on www.wetcanvas.com . Karen then continued with a demonstration on how to paint a landscape with snow which was very informative and inspiring.

Karen and Nancy will be in the Ag Center parking lot on May 23 to collect anyone’s paintings who cannot drive them to Bryson City. We will then be going to Bryson City on May 24 to hang the show at the gallery after 1:00 that afternoon.

The reception will be held Saturday, June 6, 6-8 at pm at the gallery on 32 Everrett Street. On Friday and Saturday June 26t and 2 7 from 10 am-6 pm, we will pick up our own paintings.

The discussion about our membership show in October was the next topic for discussion. Members need to have their CD’s in to Karen Chambers by August 14th, 2009. Members should enter two paintings and one will be chosen by the juror Kevin Beck. The show will run 6 weeks at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. Kevin will also be teaching a pleine aire workshop that will run the first week in October. We hope to paint at Lake Lure and Hickory Nut Farm. Ina has offered painting near her home. On June 13 there will be a paint out in Brevard at the Silver Mountain Mansion. It will be announced via e-mail and in the newsletter.

Denise announced a workshop with Deborah Squire from May 28-30. On the 30th they will be at Lake Lure. The cost is $250 for 3 days. Everyone will start at the Swannanoa studio at 9:30. There will be lots of individual attention. Call Denise at 828-333-4473 if interested.

There is also a class in sculpture starting on May 19 at the Swannanoa Art League. The instructor is Bob Wagner. At 10:30 Paul DeMarais began his demonstration. He also brought his wonderful pastels for us to buy.

Paul started his demo showing us the support he uses. It is a matte medium art board with resin. It is archival and uses any medium. He premounts his. He makes a mixture of acrylic matt medium by Liquitex (#5132/946m), and aluminum oxide grit and toner. (The grit is 280). The toner is made with a little cheap acrylic paint added to mixture.

The following are Susie Karnatz’s comments.

We could get many people together to order the aluminum Oxide.
The Boards can be purchased at Cheap Joes, scores perfectly.
Demo: Do not copy exact color from photo, photo only gives composition and basic information.
1) sketch loosely using vine charcoal, don’t press hard.
2) Block in with complimentary colors- he used a warm violet- using side of pastel (medium pressure)
3) With foam pad (1" thick from WalMart) apply acrylic liquitex medium. Do not apply with pressure
4) While application still wet, begin immediately with pastel on top (using complimentary colors).
5) Sky is not touched as it is brilliant pale color so apply Blue pastel directly.
6) Left group of trees, foreground – allow violet to show thru ( gives depth and interest).
7) Use of warm and cool colors pure tones, same values, brights – same value: drabs same value*
8) Reinforce shadows (Plein-aire painter notice the edges of shadows - outside!)
9) You do not need too much detail
10) Paul uses several pigments to create each color
Susie says it looks like great fun, quick and easy, about 45 minutes!

The meeting was adjourned at about 12 noon.

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board Meeting Minutes
September 12, 2009

Members present: Beverly Kies, Karen Wylie, Karen Chambers, Pam Potter, Susan Sinyai, Nancy Clausen, Coleen Hester

Bev called the meeting to order at 9:15 am.

Treasurer’s report: Susan S. reports as of 9/11/09 the society has $6,885.7 in it’s account.

Membership report: Kay Gordon was out of town and we have 78 members presently.

Committee Report: Karen W. and Kay G. have been working diligently on revising the bylaws and officers descriptions. We will have a meeting soon to review the revisions.

Exhibition Report: The Annual Members Show had 38 entries and 30 pieces chosen. Our Juror Kevin Beck critiqued all paintings. We discussed offering prize money. In addition, we discussed the CD process being difficult for several people and thus limiting our entries. CD’s are standard procedure for most shows. It was suggested that since this is a local show that we submit actual pieces or slides.

There was discussion about the makeup of the board, one suggestion was four officers and all have a vote on any major issues. Another suggestion was that an executive committee will be comprised of past and present board members and they can help with operational decisions. Another suggestion was that committee chairs are on the board of directors and can have a vote on major issues.

Discussion was held about having a signature level of membership and the criteria for that level. An example was to have shown work in three member shows and one national show.

New Mexico has three levels of signature membership. Discussion about our membership diversity was to encourage members from other locations to plan one event a year, such as South Carolina, or Tenn. Members.

Everette has a show hanging in gallery space in the Hollingsworth Bld. In Brevard, which is on Main Street near the visitor’s center.

It is time to renew membership of $25 dollars. We are happy to announce this is the fourth anniversary of the Appalachian Pastel Society.

Karen Chambers was awarded “Best in Show” at the Mountains Fair in Buncombe County for her pastel painting of the “Brahma Bull.” Congratulations Karen!

Beverly demonstrated her style of animal portraits at the “Opportunity House” in Hendersonville last month.

Nancy Clausen is showing her work at the Chapel Hill Museum. The show will be on display until November 1st. Congratulations Nancy!

General Meeting Minutes
September 12, 2009

Welcome new Members

Membership Juried Show Opening was announced for Nov 2 at the Black Mountain Arts Council Gallery. The reception will start at 6pm. The show will run until November.

This is our 4th year in operation and Karen Wylie and Kay Gordon are updating our by-laws to make them more succinct with our society.

Beverly Kies has agreed to stay on another year as the President. Thank you. Beverly.

Pam Potter has agreed to take on the Vice President responsibilities. Coleen Hester has declined to continue as secretary due to working full time in the school system but agrees to train and help transition the new secretary. Susan Sinyai has agreed to stay on another year as the treasurer. Karen Wylie has done a great job this year planning our programs and has graciously agreed to stay on as our Program Chairperson.

There are several positions open still open including: Secretary, Paint out Co-coordinator, Publicity Chairperson, and Gallery Show Coordinator by state or region. We will have elections at the November meeting after the by-law revision, which will include officer and chairperson descriptions. Everyone needs to think about what they are willing to do to help keep the group running and viable.

There was discussion about adding a signature level to the society, which means after meeting pre-determined requirements a member could put certain initials following their signature on their paintings. An example of such criteria is three membership shows and one National show.

Wendy Outland has an upcoming program at the Blue Spiral entitled “How to Plan your own Show” Dates and info to follow.

The next “paint out” will be at Debra Chase’s property in Bat Cave, on Saturday October 10. Thanks Debra!

We ended the meeting with a group critique of members artwork who were willing to display them and hear othersm suggestions.

Coleen Hester, Secretary

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board Meeting Minutes
November 14, 2009

1. Board Members present were: Nancy Clausen, Kay Gordon, Karen Wylie, Karen Chambers, Ed Hunting, Mary Robinson, Susan Sinyai , and Beverly Kies.

2. A discussion of the new By-Laws revision was next, esp. concerning the area of earning membership points towards membership status and how it works.
   a. “Participating members’- should be given the opportunity to earn points for being officers or board members, which includes attending all meetings in addition to participating in a show. Karen Wylie pointed out that in other pastel groups one had to be a board member or be an exhibition chair for one year. That way they got credit for the service time spent when they either did not enter or get in to a show. Motion made to accept made by Mary Robinson, seconded by Karen Chambers that this be included in the bylaws.
   b. Kay Gordon was to present the new levels of membership to the group at the meeting which included the levels to reach Signature Status (Highest level in APS): A member’s work has to be accepted into 4 APS shows or 3 APS shows and 1 year of service to the group. Discussion tabled and decision to adopt the new requirements are open for amendment later.

3. Our board meetings will be held at the Olive Garden on Tunnel Road on the first Tuesday of every even month (February, April, etc.) at 6pm until further notice.

4. Susan Sinyai gave the treasurer’s report. We currently have $4,760.87 in our account that includes $2235 in refunds for the Kevin Beck Workshop. We have received $300 from membership renewals and new members. We are paying Wendy Outland $100 for the presentation at the meeting on November 14.

5. Karen Chambers was asked the total cost of the Fall Member’s Show. She will finish tallying that up before the December Board meeting.

6. Nancy Clausen reported that the member’s show had a hard time making money. There was a discussion about a requirement of membership being pre-paid – before the take in for the exhibition. Discussion to be made later – needs to be addressed. Karen Chambers will see that this requirement is stated in the prospectus for next year’s show. A suggestion was made that APS have Membership cards made so that they could be issued each time an artist joins or renews their membership.

7. Karen Chambers reported on the dates and particulars for the 2010 show at the Gallery 86 of the Haywood County Arts Council. Size requirements were discussed. There will be two receptions, the first of which APS is responsible for the refreshments, the second – the arts council takes care of and is in conjunction with a gallery crawl. All area artists are required to be present at the first one and requested to be present at the second. All paintings will be for sale. Tastefully done nudes will be allowed.

8. Kay Gordon – Membership chair- Had only 24 memberships paid as of November 14. Kay needs info before treasurer receives it. She thought that 1/3 of people in show weren’t members. She will provide a list for people to check to see if dues were paid at check in for ALL shows. The presiding President does not pay dues. We need guidelines to keep up with who has paid.

9. Karen Wylie- Program Chair – Wendy Outland will give a workshop in the p.m. for 6 registered participants on “Hosting Your Own Show.”

10. The board voted ‘no’ against write-in ballots for officers for 2010.

11. Karen Wylie brought up the idea that some wanted 1 day workshops on another day and all day long. This was discussed and is due further discussion after she explores the possibility.

12. Board meeting adjourned at 10 a.m

Respectfully submitted,
Karen Chambers

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board Meeting Minutes
December 1, 2009

Members Present: Beverly Kies (President), Pam Potter (Vice-President), Susan Sinyai (Treasurer), Marian Sinks (Secretary), Kay Gordon, , Karen Wylie, Ed Hunting, Mary Robinson, Karen Chambers and her guest, Jim Chambers. President Beverly Kies called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm at the Olive Garden Restaurant.

Treasurers’ Report: Susan Sinyai reported the Society has $5,090.87 as its balance on November 30, 2009.

Membership: Kay Gordon reported we currently have 39 members. A general discussion followed about membership issues and the need to increase membership. It was noted that membership was at 73 last year and that attendance fluctuates due to seasonal exhibits. Various strategies for increasing membership were discussed. It was acknowledged that the APS newsletter brings in new members and should remain open. The possibility of allowing members to pay dues using PayPal was discussed.

Paint-Ins. A discussion was held about whether more structure was needed at Paint-Ins to increase attendance. One suggestion was to make each paint-in a swap meet as well. The question was raised whether a program should be held in July. Finally it was suggested that perhaps a member should be assigned to take responsibility for organizing each paint-in. The question of whether the member should receive compensation for taking responsibility was also discussed.

No formal action was taken.

Spring Membership Exhibition and Paint-Outs. It was reported that Fran Greenburg had been requested to take charge of the Membership Exhibits but Fran needs suggestions as to where and when to schedule the Spring 2010 exhibit. No one has yet been secured to organize paint-outs for 2010. No formal action was taken.

2010 Visiting Artists. Karen Wylie presented a tentative schedule of upcoming visiting artist’s workshops for 2010. A general discussion was held on the need to secure sufficient attendance at future visiting artist workshops to make them financially feasible – both for the visiting artist and for APS. It was noted that one visiting artist needs at least $850 (ten participants at $ 85 per attendee) to cover her airfare and other expenses.

It was suggested that one way to increase attendance would be to include more publicity at an earlier date about the artist and his or her workshop in the Society newsletter. The question was raised whether there should be a lower fee for someone who wished to attend just part of a multi-day workshop. A discussion was also held about whether there should be partial scholarships. No action was taken on either item.

The possibility of having shorter (two or three day) workshops to make them more affordable was alsodiscussed but it was noted that one upcoming artist had advised that she needed a five-day guarantee to make it worthwhile.

Karen Wylie asked if the general direction of her planning was satisfactory and it was agreed that she should continue in the same direction.

No other formal action was taken.

Payment of Visiting Artists. There was a discussion about the honoraria to be paid visiting artists making presentations at regular bi-monthly meetings. There has been some inconsistency in payment for visiting artists: some have been paid $100 while others were paid $50. Some artists bring art and DVD’s to sell at the meeting. Some visiting artists have requested mileage and other travel expenses but the Society has not paid travel expenses in the past.

A motion was made and seconded that all visiting artists be paid an honorarium of $100 and, after some further discussion, this motion passed. No formal action was taken on whether to pay mileage or other travel expenses in the future.

National Show. A discussion of the financial logistics for future National shows was discussed. The prospectus must be complete by April 15 but Ed Hunting said he needed to begin advance notice of the upcoming show in the December newsletter. Kay Gordon suggested that the low number of entries in our past National Show was due to the fact that there were no money awards. She noted that most National Shows have a $1,000 first prize and some had purchase awards. It was noted that no one has determined how many entries are needed in order to offer a $1,000 first prize.

Action was deferred pending securing a sponsor and/or donations. No other formal action was taken.

Library. Librarian Mary Robinson noted that donations are needed to augment the Society’s library.

By-Law Changes. Kay Gordon reminded the Board that the discussion of by-laws at the November Board Meeting had been tabled and had been raised again at November general membership meeting where a vote had been taken. However, there was apparently some ambiguity and further action will be needed about awarding points. The meeting was adjourned at 8:16 p.m.

Resolved, the APS Bylaws are hereby amended to change the definition of ‘Participating Member’ to read as follows:

“Participating Member: Member who has participated in four APS shows of any kind. This category would include non-juried shows. Or, a member who has participated in three APS shows of any kind and has been a board member or committee chair for one year.”

New Business:

1. Changes to Appalachian Pastel Society Juried Exhibition Catalog. We examined the 2008 catalog. After discussion, Karen Chambers proposed the cover of future APS Juried Exhibition Catalogs be printed on a good quality glossy cover stock and feature a color image of one of the juror’s pastel paintings. Upon motion duly made and seconded this proposal was approved.

2. Advertisements and Money Awards. A general discussion was had about money awards and ideas for advertising. No formal action was taken and the subject was carried over to the next meeting.

3. Increased Publicity. There was a general discussion of getting information out to the public to increase participation in future APS shows, workshops and to increase membership. Consideration was given to:
• Newspaper advertising,
• Extending invitations to other art societies,
• Newsletter announcements,
• Notices on the APS web-site; and
• Sending announcements or flyers to art galleries and restaurants.
No formal action was taken and this matter was carried over to the next board meeting.

4. Display Advertisement in APS Newsletter. A request was made for a special display advertisement in the APS Newsletter to increase awareness of the upcoming 2010 Juried Exhibition. No formal action was required.

5. Programs: Advertisements and Fees for Saturday Afternoon Workshops. After discussion, a motion was made, seconded and approved that: Advertisements shall be placed to increase attendance at future Saturday afternoon workshops (held after the regular membership meetings) and workshop fees shall be:
- $45.00 for members; and
- $70.00 for non-members (which includes a $25.00 one year membership).
The $45.00 fee is allocated as follows: $30.00 is paid to the instructor and the remaining $15.00 is retained by APS.

6. Programs: Jack Pardue Workshop Conflict with April “Paint-In.” The Jack Pardue workshop scheduled for Saturday April 10, 2010 at Conn-Art in Hendersonville conflicts with the scheduled “Paint-In” at the Ag. Center. It was noted that most members would probably elect to attend the Jack Pardue workshop instead of the “Paint-In.” The monthly charge for the Ag. Center meeting room is $60.00. After discussion, upon motion made and seconded it was decided that:

The April 10 “Paint-In” at the Ag. Center will be cancelled unless at least six members notify Kay Gordon (by e-mail or otherwise) before April 1 that they wish to attend the “Paint-In.”.

7. Programs: Cancellations and Future Saturday Afternoon Programs.

Cancellations and Rescheduling Luana Winner Program. It was noted that both the January 9 Luana Winner program and the March 13 Paula Ford program were cancelled. After discussion it was decided to schedule Luana Winner as the speaker/demonstrator at the July APS meeting and conduct a Saturday afternoon workshop after the meeting.
March 13 – Suzi Karnatz. It was announced that APS Member Suzi Karnatz will be the speaker at the March 13 APS meeting and will conduct an afternoon workshop.
May 15 – Nicora Gangi. It was announced that Nicora Gangi was confirmed as the speaker of the May 15 APS meeting and will conduct a two day workshop that weekend.

8. Member of the Month. After discussion it was decided future APS Newsletters would feature a member each month. Ed Hunting will prepare a recommended format for a member profile of not more than 500 words that will include a photograph of the featured member and images of one or more of his or her paintings.

9. Inclement Weather Cancellations. Karen Chambers was appointed as the person to telephone regarding cancellation of board meetings or other APS events due to inclement weather. E-mails will also be sent to announce any future cancellations.

Items Received for Information:

Pastel Society of North Carolina Juried State Exhibit. APS Representative Nancy Clausen reported that Luana Winner will chair the Pastel Society of North Carolina Juried State Exhibit. A gallery in downtown Raleigh will be the venue at a time and date to be announced. The gallery is to provide advertising in magazines, including Southern Living and cash prizes will be awarded.

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board and General Meeting Minutes
March 13, 2010

Members and Committee Chairs Present: Beverly Kies(President), Karen Wylie, Marian Sinks (Secretary), Kay Gordon, Gail Wheeler, Mary Robinson, Nancy Clausen and Karen Chambers.

President Beverly Kies called the meeting to order at 9:00 am at the Ag. Center Meeting Room.

Treasurers’ Report: Susan Sinyai sent a report that the Society had $4,849.53 as of February 28, 2009. A brief discussion was had on the need to better coordinate getting checks to Susan so she can make deposits more quickly.

Membership: Kay Gordon reported we currently have 66members – an increase of 27 from late 2009. This increase reflected:
• Many existed members who renewed after receiving a renewal notice; and
• Many new members who joined after the Board adopted a requirement of membership to to attend monthly workshops.

A general discussion followed about membership issues and the need to increase membership. It was decided not to join the Chamber of Commerce. The need for better publicity was discussed. Various strategies for increasing membership were discussed. No formal action was taken.

Demonstration and “Paint Out” on April 10. Kay Gordon announced Jack Pardue was giving a free demonstration in Hendersonville on April 10 that coincided with the ordinary Paint-In date at the Ag. Center. In view of the anticipated attendance at the Pardue demonstration it was decided to change the April Paint-In into a “Paint-Out” at Owens Park Lake. This will save the $60 monthly rental on the Ag. Center meeting room.

Nicora Gangi Workshop. Marian Sinks advised the two day workshop by Nicora Gangi (formerly of Syracuse University) would be held May 7 and 8. The Friday cost is $100 for members and $125 for non-members. The Saturday cost is $45.

Ann Templeton Workshop. Ann Templeton (our juror for the National Show in October) is giving a workshop on Abstraction in Pastel Landscapes on October 14-18 at the Ag. Center. The cost is $625.

Spring Non-Juried Membership Exhibition. Beverly Kies announced difficulty in finding a venue for the Spring Non-Juried Exhibition. Beverly advised that two members from Kingsport, TN suggested having an exhibition at East Tennessee State University. Other options considered including the Transylvania County Arts Council Gallery in Brevard and possibly the Ambleside Gallery in Greensboro. No formal action was taken.

Paint Outs. Karen Chambers will organize the June 12 paint-out. We still need a person to organize remaining paint-outs for 2010.

Luann Winter Workshop. This workshop was cancelled in February and is now re-scheduled for July.

National Show. Karen Chambers and Nancy Clausen advised the 2010 Juried IAPS exhibition will open October 22 at Gallery 86 at the Haywood Arts Council in Waynesville. Ann Templeton is the juror. Submissions are due August 11. Acceptances will be mailed September 8. Works will be received October 4 through October 11.

Library. Librarian Mary Robinson discussed usage of library materials. Mary is to prepare a proposal on library usage, fees and fines.

Member of the Month. Mary Robinson wants to feature one APS artist in each bi-monthly newsletter. The artist will submit a photograph and artist’s statement. Mary suggested members who wish to be featured should submit their names for selection.

The Board Meeting was adjourned at 10:00 a.m. and was followed by the General Membership Meeting at which the Bylaw changes were formally adopted and various items for information were discussed. A discussion was also held about the requirements of the IAPS exhibition and the need for volunteers to sell $25 ads, receive works, etc.

Marion Sinks - APS Secretary

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board Meeting Minutes
April 6, 2010

Members and Committee Chairs Present: Beverly Kies (President), Pam Potter (Vice-President), Karen Wylie (Program Chair), Marian Sinks (Secretary), Kay Gordon (Membership Chair), Nancy Clausen and Karen Chambers (Exhibitions Chairs).

President Beverly Kies called the meeting to order at 5:00 pm at Ryan’s Restaurant in Asheville.

Treasurers’ Report: Susan Sinyai sent a report that the Society had $ 6,204.50 as of March 31, 2010.

Membership: Kay Gordon reported we currently have 69 members.

Publicity. A general discussion about the APS newsletter was conducted. Beverly Kies is to coordinate with the Newsletter editor to insure that APS events are highlighted on the front page of the web-site newsletter. Karen Wylie made inquiry as to whether we could use images with higher resolution for the newsletter illustrations of artwork.

Meetings. A discussion was had on meeting efficiency. Ideas discussed included:
Always having a written agenda;
Having a chalkboard or whiteboard to show items to be discussed and to “keep the meeting moving”;
Not reiterating information that is readily available on the APS newsletter on our web-site;
Always introduce new members at the beginning of each general membership meeting and give them an opportunity to say a few words about themselves; and
Always identify the officers and committee chairs at the beginning of each general membership meeting so all members – but especially new members – will know who to ask about various subjects.

Nomination of New Officers. Beverly Kies noted that officer’s terms expire in September and we need to work on getting a slate of officers nominated in sufficient time to elect new officers. Beverly has appointed a nominating committee. Karen Chambers will canvass members to see if anyone would like to volunteer to serve as an officer, committee chair or committee member. This issue is critical since the new officers will be responsible for planning meetings beginning in September/October. This issue was tabled pending a report from the nominating committee.

Dates for Future Juried Shows. It was noted that future juried shows might be better scheduled in September instead of October since hotel rates are significantly lower in September than at the height of the “leaf season” in October.

Programs – Paint Outs. Nancy Claussen will e-mail information about Paint-outs to members.

Programs – Workshops. Karen Chambers will use the list of participants in the Margaret Dyer workshops to announce future workshops.

Exhibitions – Galleries. Sheryl Daniel and Ruth Crowe are looking into securing gallery space for up to 50 works for a future non-juried show. Nancy Claussen and Karen Chambers volunteered to help secure gallery space next year for non-juried shows. Some possible galleries include Transylvania Art Center in Brevard, Biltmore Square Mall and perhaps a January exhibit in Blue Spiral during its “new artists” month. It is contemplated that we will alternate exhibits between the Hendersonville Art Center (which charges $250 per use) and the Black Mountain Center for the Arts.

Exhibitions – National Show. An advertisement for the October juried national show in The Pastel Journal will cost $67 per month. Pam Potter is securing advertising in The Hendersonville Times-News, The Mountain Express and The Asheville Citizen-Times. The show opening will be Friday, October 22, 2010 so as to coincide with the Area Art Crawl. We will need members to volunteer to host a reception for Anne Templeton. A discussion was had about asking Anne Templeton for permission to record her selection process or, alternatively, to print her comments about each painting. No formal action was taken.

The Board Meeting was adjourned at 7:45 pm.

Respectfully submitted,
Marian Sinks, Secretary

Appalachian Pastel Society
Board and General Meeting Minutes
May 8, 2010

Members and Committee Chairs Present: Pam Potter (Vice-President), Karen Wylie (Program Chair), Marian Sinks (Secretary), Kay Gordon (Membership Chair), Gail Wheeler, Mary Robinson (Librarian), Nancy Clausen and Karen Chambers (Exhibitions Chairs) and Annette Winters. Vice President Pam Potter (in the absence of President Beverly Kies) called the meeting to order at 9:00 am at the Ag. Center Meeting Room.

Treasurers’ Report: Susan Sinyai sent a report that the Society had $ 6,130.53 as of April 30, 2010.

Membership: Kay Gordon reported we currently have 72 members – an increase of six from March 2010. This increase reflected both renewals and several new members. A discussion of whether to change the membership renewal date (presently September 1 of each year) was discussed in view of the reluctance of artists attending summer workshops to join at the end of our membership year. It was decided that persons who join after June 1 could be counted as members for the following year.

Member of the Month. The Board decided to begin featuring a “member of the month” in each Newsletter with a member to be selected at random who will then provide the needed information to the Newsletter editor.

Paint Outs. The June 12 paint-out will be held at Karen Chambers’ home. Nancy Clausen is investigating holding the August 14 paint-out either at Hickory Nut Farms (at a charge of $5 per person) or at Pearson Falls – which has a similar entry fee.

Luana Winner Workshop. Luana Winner will conduct her demonstration on Saturday July 10 from 10:00 am to noon followed by her Saturday afternoon workshop from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The cost of the afternoon workshop is $45. She will present a two-day workshop – “Finding Your Artistic Voice” – on Sunday July 11 and Monday July 12 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm both days. The cost of the two-day workshop is $100 for one day or $185 for both days.

National Show. Publicity for the National Show was discussed. The Board approved advertising our National= Show on the ArtShow.Com web site for six months at a cost of $85 with a picture to be placed on the front page. Karen Chambers will check on publicity in both Pastel Journal and Artists Magazine. Karen Chambers reported that thirty suppliers have been asked for prizes. Lorraine Plaxico emphasized that all members need to help sell advertisements for the catalog and asked everyone to take ad forms.

Ann Templeton Workshop. Karen Chambers was asked to coordinate the date of the October workshop with Ann Templeton after it was noted there was a slight discrepancy between our dates and the dates shown on Ms. Templeton’s web-site. Two people have already signed up for this workshop.

Budget. A brief discussion was held about the budgeting process. Vice President Pam Potter requested that Treasurer Susan Sinyai and other board members who have information about our income and expenses bring to our next board meeting:
· Information about our income sources (such as membership dues, workshop fees, exhibit entry fees, library rentals); and
· Information about our expenses for the last two years (such as general supplies, postage, printing, advertising, artist’s fees, space rentals, etc.).

Library. The Board approved a budget of $200 to acquire DVD’s that will be available to members for a rental fee of $5.00 per DVD for two months usage.

The Board Meeting was adjourned at 10:00 a.m. and was followed by the General Membership Meeting and Nicora Gangi’s demonstration.
